The new Google Tez app can be used to pay for movie tickets, utility bills, and make other transactions online. Tez means fast in Hindi, which the company said was one of the selling points of its new app.
It is available for both Android and iOS users. Google has tied up with all the major banks such as SBI, HDFC, Axis and ICICI for its UPI (Unified Payments Interface)-based app.
With Google Tez, users can pay directly from their bank accounts which means, there’s no need to open a separate account or worry about reloading wallets. The app also has a Cash Mode, which enables users to instantly send (and receive) money to nearby Tez users without the need to share details like bank account or phone number.
Users can also scan QR code to send money. Google has partnered with smartphone brands such as Micromax, Panasonic, Lava and Nokia for the distribution of the app.
Google’s Tez will sync with the user’s mobile number and just like in the BHIM app, this needs to be same number which is synced with the bank account. The bank account also needs to support the UPI platform. The app supports seven Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, and it supports English as well. Users can always go to settings and change the primary language.
Both Android and iOS users need to download the app and set a Google Pin or screen lock. They then need to link their bank accounts with the app. This can be done in a few simple taps. Once the process is complete, users can start sending as well as receiving money.
The app also has Tez Shield which the company claims works 24/7 to protect users from any hacking and fraud.
